Rooms filled with natural light and fresh air are invariably more beautiful, spacious and uplifting to your spirits. Daylight is the essential element that transforms conventional rooms into splendid spaces that add value and quality to your home and your life. Skylights let you bring the best of the outdoors inside.
It is an innovative alternative to a traditional skylight. A tubular skylight that is 10” in diameter can bring in as much light as a 2 foot by 2 foot traditional skylight …with less expense, less mess, and it can be installed in about two hours. There is not a more cost effective energy efficient way to bring natural light into your home or workshop.
Domed skylights are usually made from acrylic sheets. Domed skylights are used heavily in our area both commercially and residentially. White, bronze, prismatic, and clear are all used to help control light and or heat. Acrylic skylights can be made in a greater variety of sizes and shapes than glass skylights. They are generally less expensive than glass skylights. They are not as hail resistant and are not as well insulated against weather and noise.
Both Velux glass curb mount replacement skylights and acrylic bubble skylights are available in custom sizes. The glass skylights usually take 2 or 3 weeks for production. The acrylic skylight can be made in a week or less.
The correct answer is “Very rarely, when they are properly installed”. Most skylight leaks are not coming from the skylight. They originate in the base flashing, where the skylight ties into the roof. The normal cure for a leaky skylight is to remove the roofing material and base flashing and replace with new. We guarantee our re-flash jobs the same as our new installations. Leak free for 10 years.
No. All VELUX skylights have low-E glass and Argon gas between the panes, blocking out most of the heat and ultraviolet rays. The old acrylic dome skylights have no insulating qualities.
Replacing a skylight starts at $350 + tax. If we need to re-flash the skylight because of flashing failure, you will need to add the price of flashing to that. Re-flashing prices start at $350 + tax, depending on the size.
The price will vary depending on several factors. Steepness of the roof, the height and the type of ceiling (flat or vaulted) and the size of the well will all affect the price. With that in mind, a new 2′ by 4′ fixed skylight installed will start at around $2,000 + tax each. This includes framing, sheetrock, tape and bed, texturing and painting of the skylight shaft.
